Treatments For Rabies

Treatments for rabies will allow you to get control of this virus, though they need to be administered as soon as possible after exposure.

Getting Your Shots

Once you have been bitten by a rabid or potentially rabid creature, you need to go to your doctor. After they stop telling you that you’re crazy, then you can remind them that rabies is a pretty big deal and stuff. And you like the whole idea of living. You will want to talk to your doctor and tell them when you were first exposed to the virus in order to give them a time frame in which the treatment should take place. In addition, if you have been showing any symptoms (any at all), you need to make sure to let them know.

The rabies shots are expensive and they will need to be administered ten days of infection, ideally. At the time of the bite, you need to clean it well with soapy and warm water. If you can, use an antiviral cleanser as well, though that’s not necessary to buy this if you don’t already have it. Then, you will get a dose of the HRIG, human rabies immunoglobulin, which should stop the virus from attacking your body. After that, you will get four more doses of the rabies vaccine over the following two week period.

What these treatments do is stop the spread of the virus to the central nervous system and they hope your body can then pick up the slack. In most cases, you’ll be fine. But according to some rabies statistics, this doesn’t mean you have a 100% chance of recovering completely.

The shots hurt and they can cause you to feel like crap too, but that’s nothing in comparison to the side effect of death which is caused by not getting the shorts.

The Price to Pay

Now, the most painful part of the rabies treatment might be the bill that you get from your doctor. The HRIG is a very expensive treatment and you will need more of it, based on your weight. Your insurance probably isn’t going to cover it, okay?
